Welcome to Oak Hill Kennel, located on 25 beautiful, rolling acres in Vass, North Carolina, and dedicated to training retrievers for hunting and for competition. Owners John and Amy Dahl train each retriever so as to maximise his or her potential specifically for the hunting style, and/or venue of competition, desired by the owner. Through clarity of instruction and moderation of pressure, we train dogs to be confident and enthusiastic, running all-out on blinds as well as marks. Manners and obedience are instilled as habit, not maintained by threat of retribution, and thus hold up well when the dog goes home. Dogs vary tremendously in temperament, abilities, and response to training. We have over 45 years' combined experience in capitalizing on the strengths, minimizing the weaknesses, and adapting to the learning styles of individual dogs in order to bring out the best they have to offer. We are known for getting good results with soft dogs, difficult dogs, and dogs with established problems, as well as for our success with a variety of breeds. Retrievers vary so much that a flexible program is essential for consistent results. We limit the number of dogs we train to maintain the time and creativity needed for a customized approach. Our current limit is 16 dogs. Our new kennel, finished in 2006, is safe, secure, clean, and comfortable. Our training grounds offer all of the water layouts, terrain, and cover variations needed to fully educate a retriever. Our success in field trials demonstrates that we can get the best out of a dog.
